Get Highlights for Less Than $1

If you've considered lightening your hair but aren't sure which color is right for you, lemon juice may be the answer. Lemon juice permanently lightens hair when it's exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun. The effect is gradual, so you can use it several days in a row until you achieve the perfect shade. What's even better is that the color easy to maintain as your hair grows, since the difference between your roots and the rest of your hair will be subtle. As with any hair color treatment, the result depends on your original hair color, so if your hair is red, for example, you can expect it to turn strawberry blond.

You will need:
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • Leave-in conditioner

Directions:

  1. Wet your hair with 1/2 cup of lemon juice. This amount is ideal for medium length hair, so you may need more or less. Apply the lemon juice to all your hair for a lighter color, or to select locks to get highlights.
  2. Gently squeeze the excess lemon juice from your hair. Hang out in the sun for an hour to allow the bleaching process to take effect.
  3. Go back inside. Apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair to soften it and to protect it from the acidity of the lemon juice.

Tips:
  • For more even color, part your hair in different places each day you apply the lemon juice.
  • Pour the lemon juice into a spray bottle for easier application.
